Camping in the Classroom

What a day…honestly, my favorite day of the school year!  Today we celebrated Read Across America Day by transforming our classroom into a Reading Camp Out.  We also enjoyed listening to some guest readers.  Being that I teach in the school that I went to as a child, I was able to invite my favorite teacher that I had as a child.  Mr. Schneider was my first grade teacher and it was so rewarding to sit back and watch MY teacher reading to MY students in MY classroom…very special moment!

I have to admit that part of my weekend was consumed with the creating of my Camping in the Classroom product and after today, I am glad that I put the time in to make it because my kiddos loved everything that we did today and I will definitely use these activities again!  When I woke up this morning, it dawned on me that I hadn’t made any brag tags for our special day so while eating breakfast this morning, I made a set!  When I got to school I printed and laminated them quickly before the kids walked in the door.

Last night I created these cute little notes to go along with their s’more snack.  I was printing and laminating these this morning too!  Do you want a FREE copy of these?  Click HERE to download!

When the kids walked into the classroom this morning, they know to read the morning message.  Here is what it said…

I had 7 different camp sites in my classroom and I think that was a perfect amount.  That allowed for 3-4 students in each site.

I did have one tent set up and the rest of the camp sites were made by using sheets and draping them over tables and desks.  Each student brought a pillow, blanket, flashlight, and drink.  We made sure we were cozy and comfortable for optimal reading!  When each session took place, I turned off the lights, turned on a classical nature station on Pandora, and the let the magic happen!  I really wish I would have taken video today because my kiddos were reading rock stars today!

Each camp site was labeled with a camp poster.  You can purchase these camp posters by clicking HERE!

Each reading session lasted about 30 minutes.  One of the sessions involved each team using their teamwork skills in a team building activity.  Each team got to use the letters in their camp site name to build more words.  This was a great little competition that got my students working together!

As part of the day had passed, of course, it was time for a camping snack.  I made my version of a s’more and it was a hit!  I took Golden Grahams cereal, mini marshmallows, and milk chocolate chips and combined them into baggies…YUM!

I didn’t want to miss out on our math block today so we did continue with our Telling Time Unit in a fun camping theme way…Camping Time Scoot!  You can pick up a copy of this game HERE!

At the end of the day, each student got a camping brag tag to remember this wonderful day.  I love to use brag tags in my classroom as memorabilia or incentives.  You can view my entire collection of brag tags HERE!

Tomorrow we will reflect on our exciting day through writing.  I am looking forward to reading about what my kids loved about our day!

Here is a little peek at my Camping in the Classroom Pack.  It is on sale until the end of the week!

Hey Amy! The build-a-word activity is not available aside from the entire camping pack. Let me know if you have any other questions. Have a great day!
