Let’s be honest—AI is everywhere these days. It shows up in your phone, your search results, even your teaching tools. But knowing it’s all around us doesn’t always mean we understand what it actually is or how it works.
If you’re a K–2 teacher who’s felt lost in the AI conversation—or like you missed the memo on what algorithms and machine learning really mean—this training was made just for you.

You’re not behind. You just haven’t been given the right explanation yet.
In Session 2 of The ABCs of AI, we break down how AI works using examples and explanations designed specifically for K–2 teachers. No buzzwords. No complicated tech talk. Just simple, relatable scenarios—like lesson plans, literacy instruction, and everyday classroom routines—that make sense for your grade band.
AI Fundamentals Teachers Need to Know
If you’ve been wondering how AI really works behind the scenes, here’s a quick breakdown of the core concepts we cover in this session—explained in teacher-friendly terms:
1. AI runs on data.
Just like a recipe needs good ingredients, AI needs high-quality, diverse data to give useful, accurate results. If the data is limited or messy, the output will be too.
2. Algorithms guide AI decisions.
Algorithms are like lesson plans—they’re step-by-step instructions that tell the AI what to do with the data it’s given. Without them, AI wouldn’t know how to respond or what to prioritize.
3. Machine learning helps AI improve over time.
AI “learns” by recognizing patterns—kind of like how we teach kids to read. It’s trained, it practices by making predictions, it’s evaluated, and then it improves based on feedback.
4. Bias affects AI output.
Since AI is trained on human-created content, it can reflect biases or misinformation. That’s why it’s important to think critically about the responses you get and consider where the information might have come from.

AI Fundamentals for K–2
Most tech trainings focus on upper grades or general K–12 strategies. But if you’re in a K–2 classroom, your needs are different. You don’t have time for theory—you need clear, simple info that applies to your real-life classroom decisions.
Now, you could Google “AI fundamentals” and get a long list of definitions—but that won’t help much when you’re trying to apply it to your K–2 classroom.
What makes this training different is how it connects these big concepts to real-life teaching situations.
You’re on a Pathway to AI Literacy
This session is designed for the emergents and novices—teachers who are ready to learn but don’t want to feel like they’re drowning in unfamiliar terms. It’s okay if you’re just starting. This is the foundation.

And once you understand the basics, tools like ChatGPT, Canva Magic Write, and other AI-powered platforms will feel a whole lot more approachable—and more useful.
