11 Easy Holiday Crafts for Kids Roundup

Are you looking for winter holiday art projects to create with your students that won't bust the bank? We are here to tell you affordable (or even free) winter crafting is possible! Let's take a deep dive into crafts made with materials you might even be able to scrounge out of the back of your crafting closet.

With basic supplies, your classroom can become a holiday craft bazaar. Try one craft, or try them all!

1-Yarn Candy Cane

Materials Needed:

  • Cardboard, poster board or card stock
  • Yarn
  • Glue (hot or bottled)

Directions:

  1. Cut out a candy cane shape from cardboard, poster board or card stock.
  2. Wrap with your first color, use glue to attach both ends of the string.
  3. Continue wrapping until it is completely covered.
  4. Glue on a loop if using as an ornament.

2-Cut Popsicle Stick Tree Ornament

Materials Needed:

  • Popsicle sticks at various lengths. (We recommend cutting these without students present. Here are 3 ways to cut them!)
  • Gems or beads
  • Felt or paper for star

Directions:

  1. Cut the sticks into 5 lengths. (Each student needs 5 cut sticks, one whole stick.)
  2. Glue down the cut popsicle sticks on the full stick, shortest to longest.
  3. Add gems or beads as desired.
  4. Glue the star and a hanging loop on top.

3-Handprint Wreath

Materials Needed:

  • Green construction or printer paper
  • Red pompoms
  • Ribbon or yarn
  • Glue

Directions:

  1. Have students trace their hand several times. It will take 15-20 hands to make the wreath.
  2. Carefully cut out all hand traces.
  3. Glue the hands overlapping, creating a circular shape.
  4. Glue the pompoms in a berry bunch.
  5. Attach a hanging loop.

4-Triangular Tree Ornament

Materials Needed:

  • Popsicle sticks (3 per student)
  • Brown felt or paper
  • Yellow felt or paper
  • Beads or gems
  • Ribbon or yarn

Directions:

  1. Glue the popsicle sticks together in a triangle
  2. Attach a trunk and star.
  3. Stick on gems or beads as desired.
  4. Attach a hanging loop.

5-Tiny Gnome

Materials Needed:

  • Toilet paper tubes OR card stock
  • Yarn
  • Tiny pompoms
  • Felt
  • Masking tape

Directions:

  1. If using paper, roll it into a cylinder shape and glue it closed.
  2. Cut enough yarn strips for the beard.
  3. Attach tape to the top of the yarn strips, and wrap around the toilet paper tube or paper cylinder.
  4. Cut felt into a shape that can be rolled into a cone.
  5. Glue on the hat, making sure the tape is covered.
  6. Give the beard a trim if needed.

6-Holiday Bookmarks

Materials Needed:

  • Scrapbook paper or card stock in holiday colors
  • Ribbon or yarn
  • hole punch
  • stickers
  • Laminator (optional)

Directions:

  1. Cut strips of scrapbook paper in a suitable bookmark size.
  2. Students decorate their bookmarks with holiday stickers, cut out magazine pictures or with their own winter holiday art doodles.
  3. Optional step: laminate it!
  4. Punch a hole and thread ribbon or yarn through.

7-Wooden Ornaments

Materials Needed:

  • Wooden shape ornaments or Tree Cookies: Use a saw to create your own, or head to Amazon or a craft store.
  • Markers, crayons or paint
  • String for hanging loops

Directions:

  1. Choose your decorating medium.
  2. Hang up!

8-Shrinky Dinks

Materials Needed:

  • Shrinky dink sheets
  • Sharpies
  • Oven

Directions:

  1. Using the sharpies, students draw their holiday designs on the shrinky dink sheets.
  2. Cut the designs out.
  3. Punch a hole near the top of the design.
  4. Bake at 325 degrees for 1-3 minutes on a wax paper lined baking sheet.
  5. String a hanging loop.

9-Ugly Sweater

Materials Needed:

  • Card stock
  • Markers, colored pencils or crayons

Directions:

  1. Cut out a sweater template for students to trace onto their desired colored paper.
  2. Students color on whatever holiday designs they can think of.
  3. Tip: These can be hung as a garland.

10-Ribbon Tree Ornament

Materials Needed:

  • Enough sticks for the class
  • Various colors and lengths of ribbons
  • String for hanging
  • Glue

Directions:

  1. Collect enough small sticks, one per student. (Your class may enjoy taking a quick nature walk to collect these!)
  2. Cut various lengths of ribbons (prep ahead of time).
  3. Students practice tying a simple knot while putting ribbon lengths on their sticks, shortest to longest.
  4. Glue a hanging loop at the top.

11-Design a Stocking

Materials Needed:

  • Stocking template on card stock
  • Markers, crayons or colored pencils
  • Optional: Cotton balls

Directions:

  1. Students will color and decorate their stockings as desired.
  2. Optional: glue cotton balls along the top of the stocking.
  3. Tip: hang as a garland!
