How do the three reading levels help with differentiation?
Differentiation is easy when you have three levels of the same text AND three different levels of the comprehension questions as well. This way ALL second grade students – whether they are below level, at level, or above level – will feel successful and equipped to join in the conversation.
In addition, the comprehension questions offer a variety of response types. This allows students to show their knowledge in multiple ways. As a bonus, it’s also great test prep because it exposes students to different types of questions!
Teacher Tip: When using differentiated passages, give all students the same passage title but assign the level that best matches their current reading needs. This keeps the class conversation inclusive while still giving each student text they can access successfully.

Hi there! My team and I are trying to navigate 2nd grade reading comprehension. The units provided and the scope and sequence look different and we were wondering if the scope and sequence is supposed to correlate directly?
Hello Elaina! There is not a specific scope and sequence for our reading passages. This means they can be used at any point in the year, as a supplement for any curriculum or scope and sequence. They do not progress in skill level, but you can use the different levels to present below, at, and above grade level text to your students as they naturally progress during the school year.
