How to Identify Gaps in Phonics Using a Phonics Screener

Literacy, Phonics

Written by: Jess Dalrymple

Phonics is a big part of helping young readers become strong readers by teaching them how letters and sounds work together. A phonics screener can be a great way to spot any gaps in a child's phonetic understanding, so you know exactly where to focus instruction. Catching these gaps early on makes a huge difference in boosting confidence and success with reading!

Introducing the Phonics Screener

Kids learning how to read typically start with letter-sound recognition, move on to blending individual sounds to form words, and then practice breaking words down into individual sounds, known as segmenting. Our phonics screener follows this progression with quick checks for each skill, allowing you to move through the stages with a child and quickly identify any areas where they need more practice.

Administering the Phonics Screener

Watch this short video for step-by-step instructions on how to prepare, administer, and analyzethe screener results.

Analyzing the Results

Once you've determined any areas where your student has missed five or more points, you'll know where to focus instruction. Also, look for patterns in the student's responses – like if mistakes are consistently being made with certain letter-sound combinations. This could mean they need more focused practice with those sound/symbols. Catching these patterns and gaps in understanding early will help you provide the right reading interventions to stay on track!

Creating an Action Plan Based on Screener Results

Using the results of the screener, you can create a targeted action plan to support each student's reading growth. More on next steps after screening to address common literacy gaps.
