Ghost Spelling and Fact Family Haunted Houses

Tis’ the season for pumpkins, skeletons, bats, spiders, candy, black cats, witches, ghosts, and haunted houses.  In an effort to try to maintain a little bit of my sanity…at least until Thursday…we decided to keep up with our regular curriculum with a little Halloween twist.  In math we are finishing up our addition and subtraction unit.  My students have been learning about fact families so we decided to make Fact Family Haunted Houses!  I LOVE how they turned out!  They look bright and creepy in our hallway!

This week we are working on words that have -ay and -ai in them.  I try to keep spelling practice fun but I would have to say that we have a new favorite way to practice our spelling words

…GHOST SPELLING!  My kids wrote their spelling words into their spelling notebooks using a white crayon.  Then the magic happens…they use a marker to color over top of the white words and the spelling words appear.  The kids honestly thought this was the coolest thing they had seen in awhile…too funny!  I decided to add to the fun by playing some Halloween music from Pandora (BTW…I LOVE Pandora!) and then I turned down the lights to make it a little more spooky.  My kids insisted that their ghost writing showed up even better in the dark!  😉  Ha!  Ha!
