Ghost Spelling and Fact Family Haunted Houses

Fall, Halloween, Seasonal, Winter Holidays

Written by: Angie Olson

Tis’ the season for pumpkins, skeletons, bats, spiders, candy, black cats, witches, ghosts, and haunted houses.  In an effort to try to maintain a little bit of my sanity…at least until Thursday…we decided to keep up with our regular curriculum with a little Halloween activity twist.  In math we are finishing up our addition and subtraction unit.  My students have been learning about fact families so we decided to make Fact Family Haunted Houses!  I LOVE how they turned out!  They look bright and creepy in our hallway!

  1. Trace a square using a template on black construction paper for students to cut out
  2. Trace a triangle using a template on yellow/green/orange construction paper for students to cut out
  3. Students use the scraps from the triangle paper to cut out their own door and shutters for 4 windows (shutters are glued by folding the edges only)
  4. Students draw & cut out their own ghosts to hide behind each window
  5. Give each student a post it note with 3 numbers…each number goes into a corner of the triangle.
  6. Students write the two addition and two subtraction problems to complete their fact family and write them in the center of the triangle roof
  7. Students can draw “spooky” things on the house if they’d like

Tip: Have students use pencil first and then trace with permanent marker.

Ghost Spelling: A Magical Halloween Activity!

This week we are working on words that have -ay and -ai in them. I try to keep spelling practice fun but I would have to say that we have a new favorite way to practice our spelling words…

…GHOST SPELLING!

My kids wrote their spelling words into their spelling notebooks using a white crayon.  Then the magic of this Halloween activity happens. They use a marker to color over top of the white words and the spelling words appear.  The kids honestly thought this was the coolest thing they had seen in a while…too funny!  I decided to add to the fun by playing some Halloween music and then I turned down the lights to make it a little more spooky.  My kids insisted that their ghost writing showed up even better in the dark!  😉  Ha!  Ha!
