When it comes time to teach grammar, many teachers feel frustrated. They plan tons of grammar activities in hopes of making the concepts stick, but find grammar activities are often dull and uninteresting for kids. If this sounds familiar, you're in luck! We have the PERFECT grammar activity that is engaging for the students and easy to plan/implement. What is it?! Grammar Toothy! (Keep reading for a grammar Toothy FREEBIE!)

Enhance Literacy with Embedded Grammar Lessons

Research on the Science of Reading (SOR) dating back to the 1970s shows that teaching grammar as isolated rules doesn't effectively transfer to writing and speaking. What works better is embedding grammar within the context of writing. This is why our writing program Lucky to Learn Writing (LTLW) includes grammar skills integrated into writing lessons. This approach ensures that the same skills and standards are met, but in a meaningful context that connects with the rest of the literacy curriculum.

How to use Grammar Toothy Activities in the Classroom

Toothy, which is available for literacy, math and social/science concepts, is a hands-on, engaging activity. Bonus: once students learn how to play one version of Toothy, they can play them all as the “rules” stay the same! There are a few easy ways to implement Toothy:

  • Whole Group: the teacher projects a toothy math on the board and the class works together to answer the task cards. What a great way to intro a new grammar skill!
  • Small Group: assign the toothy as a group activity OR work with flexible/leveled student groups to work on the grammar concept they are struggling with
  • One on One: With the wide range of Toothy activities available in the grammar pack (and all the other subject areas!) teachers can differentiate which grammar activity each student is working on. (Some students could work on verbs, some punctuation, some ABC order, etc..)

Students LOVE drawing those teeth on their Toothy mats. And, they LOVE being able to check their own answers! Remember the glorious days when the teacher would let you check your answers in the teacher's manual?! Yep, it's like that.

I love the concept. There are so many resources I do not know where to begin. There is a math bundle, math toothy task cards, toothy task kit mat bundle, math sheet bundle, and math kit. Plus everything else. Where do I buy first to start?

Hello Martha! This is a great question! I have two suggestions for you: 1) If you would like to dip your toes in and try Toothy, many teachers recommend the Math Toothy task cards. We also have this set for Kindergarten and 3rd grade math skills.
      2) If you want to be able to grab any of our Toothy sets at any time you need them, I would recommend checking into the All Access Membership, where you can browse and instantly download any of the 10,000 Lucky Little Learners activities! It’s an amazing value, especially if you would like to use more than one LLL resource during the school year!
