Hey there! I am going to make a bold statement here…are you ready?

If your students aren’t CONCRETE and yes, I’m talking SOLID in their understanding of PLACE VALUE, do not move on with your math instruction.

Wait! Please don’t throw tomatoes at me!

Hear me out…all the math concepts that you are going to teach this year will be more easily understood if your students have a confident grasp on their place value understanding. If you are thinking, Angie, our curriculum wants us to move on! We have to get to addition and subtraction with regrouping, money, time, measurement, the list goes on!

Yes, I get that. There are days that I wish I could scream not nice things when we feel the pressure of the speed of our district and curriculum pacing guide. That is when we have to get REAL, put on the brakes, and say “WE NEED MORE TIME WITH THIS SKILL.”

Let me be clear. I don’t feel that way with every skill because if we’re being honest, we wouldn’t get through all of our math standards if we took this approach but PLACE VALUE is the foundation.

Without place value, all other math taught this year is going to be a huge STRUGGLE.

If most of your class has a solid grasp but you have 5 or so students that are still having a hard time, then supplemental place value small group intervention is needed.

If you are looking for some research based, engaging, and effective place value resources, I’m your girl. Did I mention how much I love math? I love it so much I got my master’s degree in mathematics. Yes, I’m a nerd in that way. Ha!

Anyways, here are a list of my Place Value resources that will help get your students where you want them so you can CONFIDENTLY move into the other math concepts with ease.
