I am a 2nd grade teacher in a 3 section, Title I school with a class of 21 students: 11 boys and 10 girls. (Yes, I know, I am lucky to have such a manageable sized class!) I am often asked about my 2nd grade schedule so here is what my daily schedule looks like:
My entire reading block is 135 minutes. 100 minutes are spent on core reading and 35 minutes are spent on tier reading. During my core reading block my students receive a balanced literacy approach to instruction. You can see how this is structured from the image above in the core reading block part of my schedule. During my tier reading instruction, my students are put into four different groups and it is there that they receive instruction with the primary focus of reading comprehension and fluency. I will also do more explaining in the video you see below.
CORE VS. TIER MATH:
Math is my favorite subject to teach! My students receive 90 minutes of math instruction. 60 minutes are spent in core math and 30 minutes are spent in tier math. My tier math groups are ran similar to my tier reading groups. I have one para and two interventionists. I do the lesson planning for the para. The content that is covered during our tier math groups would be the core math lesson skill from the previous day. This is our first year of this type of structure and I am loving it. I really feel like I am able to differentiate and reach all the varying levels of learners in my classroom. Take a look at my video below to get a closer look at how I organize my math resources!
